What is Add Page Numbers to PDF

This tool lets you automatically add page numbers to any PDF document directly in your browser โ€” no software to install, no files uploaded to a server. You have full control over where the numbers appear, how they look, and which pages get numbered.

Choosing the Right Position

Page numbers can be placed in six positions: top-left, top-center, top-right, bottom-left, bottom-center, and bottom-right. Bottom-center is the most common convention for documents and reports, while top-right is popular for books and manuals. Use the margin sliders to fine-tune the exact distance from the page edge.

Number Formats

Choose from three formats: standard numeric (1, 2, 3), Roman numerals (I, II, III), or lowercase alphabetic (a, b, c). Roman numerals are great for front matter like a table of contents, while standard numbers work best for the main body of a document.

Prefix, Suffix, and Start Number

Add custom text before or after each page number. For example, set the prefix to "Page " to get "Page 1", "Page 2", etc. Or add a dash suffix to get "1-", "2-". You can also change the start number โ€” useful when a document is part of a larger series and needs to continue from a specific page number.

Skipping Pages

Use the "Skip first page" option to leave the cover page unnumbered while still counting it in the sequence. You can also uncheck individual page thumbnails to exclude specific pages from numbering entirely โ€” perfect for blank pages or full-page images.

Show Total Pages

Enable the "Show total pages" option to display the total page count alongside each number, such as "1 / 10" or "Page 3 of 10". This style is common in professional documents, presentations, and legal filings.
